Christmas time is here!!!! Letter C week ushered in all things Christmas, and we loved it! Many of our invitations this week offered the opportunity to work on counting. One way they worked on counting was to draw a card, count out the number of Play Doh balls to go along with the card, then mash them with the tool. They also counted dots on dominoes and matched them with the standard written number. We took a very Christmas inspired approach to our name practice this week and put letter beads, followed by colorful beads on pipe cleaners to make candy canes for our classsroom tree. We also counted out buttons to make ornaments for our tree and rolled a dice to figure out how many lights to add to our strand using an ink dobber.
We built all sorts of new things with tools that connect. There were vehicles, animals, people too! These engineers make a plan, and see it through. Imaginations and dramatic flare ran wild with the castle and its characters. Friends played games and enjoyed coloring Christmas pictures. We had many artists paint Christmas pictures with watercolors and paint part of our collaborative tree which we will be decorating this upcoming week.
In Wiggle Room we decorated a Christmas tree, then we were able to “Rock Around” it! We also practiced counting and taking turns when we played hopscotch. Since it is Christmas, we are also singing Christmas carols.
There were so many interesting things in Science this week. On Monday, we learned about open and closed circuits. We changed the pathway of the circuit and made different things happen. Tuesday was all about states of matter. Hot cocoa allowed us to explore solid (marshmallows), liquid (hot cocoa), and gas (steam). Friends saw the effect of steam on glasses. We also observed how the heat started to change the solid. Then we enjoyed the hot cocoa. On Wednesday, candy canes were the subject matter of our observation. We talked about how change can happen fast, and it can be slow. We put a peppermint, cherry, and wintergreen candy in four solutions (tap water, sugar water, salt water, rubbing alcohol). This slow change was visible by the end of the day as the water solutions had dissolved the candy canes completely. The candy canes in rubbing alcohol looked to be unchanged! Tasty Science closed out the week when we mixed up and baked Christmas cookies.
